In a surprise move that has shocked voters and his father, Opie Taylor publicly announced his support for Democrat Barack Obama here in Des Moines. As a gesture to show his seriouness, the young Mr. Taylor did some 11th hour campaigning for the Senator in Iowa. The Obama campaign is hoping that Opie’s enduring “awe-shucks” charm can push them over the edge and secure an impressive margin of victory over Hillary. In a statement made through Master Taylor’s publicist, the Mayberry, North Carolina native said “awe, I like Mr. Obama he’s real swell and I hope that my Pa and Aunt Bea will come around to seeing things like I do.” Tensions are likely pretty high in the Taylor household because of Sheriff Taylor’s outspoken support of Mike Huckabee. Aunt Bea could not be reached for comment.
