A few weeks ago I was still receiving emails telling me that Barack Obamais a Muslim. Imagine my surprise when overnight the tone changed. Yes, he’s a Christian. A devoted Christian who has been an active contributing member of the same church for some time. Only this isn’t a good thing, it’s bad, because apparently the senior pastor of this particular church is a black power extremist. I’m not a good sheep. I don’t take everything that is said from the pulpit without a grain of salt, and I don’t take anything I see in my inbox without a salt lick the size of my head.
This isn’t the first time this has come up in Obama’s campaign. Early on there were concerns, and I read some transcripts of Reverend Wright’s more extremist sermons. I’ve listened to some audio, I’ve seen PDFs of some bulletins. And Reverend Wright is wrong. He takes a hard stance. He says painful and inflammatory things. This is not all he says, it’s not the only thing he says. He doesn’t give the same sermon every Sunday. My own pastor occasionally gives sermons I find extreme or even offensive, and there are times where things are endorsed from the pulpit that I find incredibly distasteful. But is it every Sunday? No. I have friends at my church, relationships, the church is an integral part of my community, so I stay. When I disagree I voice my disagreement if appropriate, and people who know me know that I am NOT a carbon copy of that which stands behind the pulpit.
Barack Obama is not a mindless sheep. He attends a church that is an integral part of his community, a church where he has friends and family. There is no church where every member of the congregation will agree with every word invoked into the loudspeakers. You discuss and discard that which does not feed you, and you hold on to that which is good. If Barack Obama were to say, “I stand firmly behind every sermon ever preached”, I would write him off immediately. Only he has already stated that he does not endorse extremism.
This is another non-issue on a slow news day.
