(psst – she lives amongst the Amish)
There is a sect of people of deep faith and tradition, and this faith colors every part of their lives. They live segregated from Western society. They lead quiet lives with their women staying home, their children attending special religious schools, their men and women both dressed in conservative garb peculiar to their traditions. Women do not expose flesh beyond hands and faces, their hair is pinned up and they wear head coverings or scarves. Most of the men own firearms and use them regularly. People of other traditions that live nearby tend to avoid too much contact out of respect and possibly fear.
This sect of people also has the particular privilege of controlling large amounts of land housing a very sought after energy source: Corn.
A word of caution to the Amish: Our government has shown it’s propensity for intolerance and use of brute force. When they come for your farms, surrender willingly. We don’t want a brutal civil war.

Now that you mention it, the price of ethanol is going up…
Small private farms that market locally are raising their prices this year. I forget exactly how much they’re estimating, but at the farmer’s market they talk a lot about how the demand for corn due to ethanol is causing a lot of infighting among distributors.
It’s not exactly a “civil war” over corn, but, well… RUN, AMISH, RUN!
Just an interesting sidenote, last time I was Indiana the big story was an Amish Cocaine ring that was broken up. Can anyone imagine a jacked up amish kid in your apartment. Imagine the barns he would build. I never thought I would read the words amish cocaine ring.
