Since Tuesday, the media focus has shifted from the Democratic Primary to the general election and the folks have settled on the McCain vs Obama race. Rumor has it that Bill & Hillary are scoping out condos in Toronto in anticipation of a Hillary run for Canadian Prime Minister. As you’d expect, Clinton sycophant Paul Begala is currently taking a tutorial on Canadian election law to find Clinton size loopholes in the residency requirements. As we’ve learned, rules and laws don’t always apply to the Clintons and I doubt this fact will change in The Great White North either.
The old saying goes “It ain’t over ’til the Fat Lady sings.” Well, this Democratic Primary won’t officially be over ’til the Hirsute Woman gets paid apparently. Reporting in recent days suggests that the Hillary folks are working behind the scenes to get Hillary’s campaign debts paid-off by the DNC and/or Obama. Note that the debt consists of a couple personal loans Hillary made to herself, I can’t imagine what kind of interest she charged herself. Back to reality.
My first take on the McCain vs Obama match-up is hopeful and exciting. The campaigns are supposedly working on combined forums for the two candidates. These forums would not be debates, but rather would done in the town-hall meeting style with both candidates having a conversation with voters. When I read this, my heart swelled with pride and a noticeable tear formed on the rim of my lower left eyelid of this PolitiPornster. This would be CHANGE my fellow PolitiPornsters. As you know, this country and voters from both parties have a raging hard-on for change this election cycle. However, PolitiPorn would like to put forth another idea. This idea would signal a huge change for voters and the direction of this country. It could potentially usher in a new era in politics.
Here’s the idea in a nutshell, before the respective conventions, the candidates and campaigns get together and agree that neither will pick a running mate for Vice President. Further, the two would agree that the Second-Place finisher would be Vice President! Sound crazy? You bet it does, but it’s just crazy enough to work!
There are so many reasons that PolitiPorn thinks this would work and lead to the much-needed healing that this country so severely needs after the 8 year debacle of Bush’s Reign of Error.
First, believe it or not, these two guys compliment each other. The experience that Obama is suppose to lack is nicely supplanted by the experience that McCain’s advanced years affords. To that end, Obama’s youth, vigor and ability to motivate could augmentMcCain’s lack of youth, vigor and ability to motivate. Where McCain is monotone and quite frankly boring, Obama is exciting, fresh and new. Even my Republican friends (yes I have a few) have commented that they have been moved and impressed when Obama speaks. They’ve also noted that Obama’s speeches harkin back to MLK, JFK and to some extent Ronald Reagan. Who doesn’t want that in a president or vice-president? I don’t think that you can consider yourself an American if you are not moved by the call to something for your country and ask not what it can do for you. Neither Clinton nor the Bushes EVER made such a call or made me feel motivated to act.
Hell, even as a screaming liberal, I was proud of my country and president when President Reagan told Gorbachev to “tear down this wall!” But what did Clinton or either Bush say that made me proud? OK, maybe when Bush Jr. stood atop the rubble of the WTC and retorted that the terrorists would hear us real soon. But the pride of that moment and president was mitigated nay destroyed by Bush’s use of the terrorist threat for political gain and the way that he ruined all of the good will expressed by allies in the days after 9/11. Bill Clinton on the otherhand, had a particular penchant for public speaking but the substance was lacking. When he pointed his first knuckle at the camera and claimed to have not had sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky, he lost alot of Americans shortly thereafter.
No doubt, even Democrats could agree that Obama would benefit from the counsel of McCain on all things military. Afterall, McCain is a military man with a family tradition of exceptional service and sacrifice. By the same token, McCain could benefit from Obama’s tempering of McCain’s more hawkish military aspirations. Perhaps 100 years in Iraq could be successfully whittled down to say 25 or 15. Either way, Americans would get a military policy going forward that would represent a compromised approach.
This idea sounds crazy, I know but it is not unprecedented in our country’s rich history. In fact, the picking of Vice-President is somewhat new. The founders, who did not foresee development of political parties but apparently founded this country on the Bible, actually awarded to the person receiving the second highest number of votes. With the severe divisions in this country, why not go back to it? I must admit though, that this idea comes out of sense that although I favor Obama, I truly believe that this country could benefit a great deal from having either of these fine men serve as President.

PUT DOWN THE CRACK PIPE!
Wow, what have you been smoking?
Although I did like how you pretty much said “there ain’t no way Obama is going to beat McCain.”
You forgot to mention former President William Jefferson Clinton’s crowning non-achievement which lead to President Bush, Jr.’s moment on the rubble of WTC mentioned above.
Former President William Jefferson Clinton was given THREE seperate chances to “PULL THE TRIGGER” on Osama but for whatever reason passed. Welcome to Iraq folks. Oh, and having to put up with Monica Lewinsky’s ex-boyfriend’s wife on the campaign trail too. That’s been real fun.
How long did you spend coming up with the “Crack Pipe” zinger? Come on, fess up you’re actually a writer for Saturday Night Live.
Anywho, I’m sorry that the political culture is passing you by. How does that feel? You know, being obsolete and all.
No worries though, you’ll always have Rush, The Falafel King and Sean Vanity to feed your hate-filled dribble.
BTW, what was the title of that Presidential Briefing Memo that was ignore? I think it was something like “bin Laden Determined to Strike in US”. I wonder why Bush ignored it.
That aside, and to flog a dead horse yet again, the 9/11 attacks were a culmination of many people’s mistakes. Do you really think that killing Osama would have stopped the attacks? I doubt it. Osama may be the leader of al Queada but that doesn’t mean that if he dies we’re done and the terrorism stops. To believe that and to keep bringing it up is stupidity. Go back to listening to Rush and his echo chamber of stupidity.
I’ve heard of “left wing sights” I guess I’ve found one here.
That “CRACK PIPE” thing was easy for me (I’m kinda witty some times).
I used to listen to Rush, realy can’t stand to listen to Hanity (he’s jsut so negative). I feel like beating my dog on a good day if I listen to him. Most of t he national talk radio people are so negative that it has a bad affect on me if I expose myself to it.
I am not privy to any Presidential memos.
I do however agree with you that the WTC was a culmination of errors. But I won’t go so far as to say that it would definately would have happened even if Slick Willy would have been doing his job…instead of the job being done to him.
Nice name calling too… what grade are you in again?
Yes, you’ve found a left-leaning “sight” [sic]. I’m just surprised that it took you this long to figure it out. Then again, the power of perception is not universal nor wasted on you.
As for the Presidential Memo, you may not have been privy to the actual document itself but you may recall that Condi Rice testified about it before the 9/11 Commission.
Finally, the name calling, the only names I could find in my comment, other than Rush, were the generally accepted shorthand or nicknames if you will for Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity.
However, on topic, i.e. the article, that was not an expression I’ve what I believe WILL happen but merely a thought about a more ideal situation. For too long now, this country has been split between two parties and political paradigms that have lusted for power so greatly that they no longer look for solutions to the problems everyday Americans face. Instead they are more motivated to engage in the politics of personal destruction and the gotcha game.
The HuffingtonPost’s, MoveOn.org’s, Hannity’s, Rush’s, O’Reilly’s and Coulter’s have done nothing but add fuel to this fire. Something has to happen. Now, I’m not so naive to think that Obama or McCain would ever agree to the arrangement I’ve proposed. The impetus for my writing the article, was McCain & Obama’s apparent willingness to hold joint TownHall style meetings to discuss REAL issues instead of avoiding one another and engaging in the same old politics. You know, the Rove & Carville brand of politics.
I would actually DIE if that happened. It would be too awesome for words.
Seriously, my husband and I wish that you could elect the President and Vice President SEPARATELY. That you could vote for people, not a party and not a ‘ticket’.
I can’t stand the party politicking that goes on. What you described would be a nice JUICY wakeup call.
I had actually figured out the left wing sight thingy early on… I just know how you like feeling superior so I figured I would help with your ego.
Now if I were to be sensative and all I could point to your comment of
“I’m sorry that the political culture is passing you by.”
that I am some sort of a political neanderthal (name calling)but since I’m not I won’t.
And just for the record… I too am just sick and tired of all the bickering and fighting.
Listen our politicians (at work) then imagine them when they get home with their kids. “Now, children that’s no way to act. Don’t treat your brother/sister that way. You need to learn to treat each other with respect.” The ole don’t do as I do, do as I say.
Sorry to say that Murtha and people of his ilk seem to be the worst of the worst. I think when politicians with his (obvious) visible platform are so vocal about our troops it truely emboldens our terrorist enemies. How could it not? Honestoy, how could it not?
And don’t get me started on the media that you guys have in your hip pocket.
I’m glad that you acknowledge that I own “Rupert Murdoch”.
So riddle me this, because my ego is expanding to excess, where are all these EMBOLDENED Terrorists hanging out these days?
And by your logic, if we all wear flag-lapel pins and blindly follow the lead of the Bush administration, terrorism as we know it will end.
No one called you a neanderthal, but obviously your grasp of logic, current events and politics leaves much to be desired. Many of my Republican friends, yes I have a couple, argue many of the same points you present here, but they can do it without the hyperbole and tautologies. Try that for once.
Keep posting, you’ll get it right eventually. Good luck!
“I’m glad that you acknowledge that I own “Rupert Murdoch”.”
Oh, Politipornster, you always know how to give me a giggle!
First I want to make sure you want to go there. I mean with where are the terrorists hanging out and the flag lapel pin thing.
If you haven’t GOOGLED my son in law yet “Sgt. Buddy James Hughie do so. Then I will get back to you on both of those subjects.
I never claimed to have a grasp on politics just whom I believe will serve our Armed Forces best.
Look, we’ve discussed your Son-in-Law before and again, I am sorry for your family’s loss. Sgt. Hughie paid the ultimate price and is a hero/patriot to be sure.
However, you family’s loss does not invalidate anyone’s opinion. Sgt. Hughie died for a lot more than the Republican political platform. His sacrifice was to COUNTRY not a sacrifice offered upon the altar of the GOP.
As for lapel pins, I’ve had this debate with many folks. I don’t wear them, plain & simple. In fact, while I fault no one who wears one, I could make an argument that they (lapel pins) are a desacretion of the flag I salute, honor and ultimately will rest under in my coffin. The pin is no less a bastardization of the flag as a star & bars thong or Ole Glory condom would be. Why is that you ask? Well, The US Flag Code states the following “The flag should not be used as “wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.” What is a lapel pin, but an ordornment to apparel.
Now, I know that the Code also includes a mentioning of the allowance for lapel pins, but I personally believe this to contradictory of the Code’s intent with regard to Flag patches relegated to military, police, etc. And the allowance of flag lapel pins stands in stark contrast to the prohibition of flags as apparel (and in my opinoin “adornments thereof”).
Suffice it to say, I’m a big fan of free speach however and I don’t care what one does with their flag. By contrast, I honor my country’s flag and ALL that it stands for.
But, back to the lapel pin thing. Do you seriously believe that wearing a flag lapel pin makes you a better American or somehow more patriotic? Don’t you owe more to your country than piercing the lapel of your jacket with some stupid pin?
Imagine if the Lapel had been so important during our country’s history as Republicans now claim it to be, perhaps JFK would have said “Ask not what you can do for country, but Ask ‘Where is the Flag Lapel Pin Store.’” Maybe Lincoln could have said, “Four score and 7 years ago, our Forefathers set out to have all Americans wear Flag Lapel Pins.” And maybe, just FDR could have quipped “The only thing we have to fear, is losing our Flag Lapel Pins.”
Just as you don’t need to wear a cross necklace to be true and believing Christian, you don’t need to wear a Flag Lapel Pin to be true and patriotic American.
No, no just don’t blow me off. Did you GOOGLE him? You see if you did then I can believe that you see him as a real person. As the husband, daddy and friend that he was.
I am guessing that you did not bother.
And you sir, have no right saying what Buddy died for. However, you are correct in that he died for more than the Republican political platform. Buddy died loving people. Buddy was embeded with the ANAs and volunteered for every single medical mission to the local vilages. The locals loved him (personally). So much so that they made a wooden chest and enlayed it with gold with “COOPER” on top. The Army realizing his sacrifice so much that the new FOB is called “Camp Hughie”.
But you are to busy trying to make your political point than to reach out to some stranger and too honestly be able to say; “Hey, I looked at that stuff about your son-in-law, he realy was a remarkable guy.”
Regarding the lapel pen. It’s not just the lapel pen. It’s Obama’s refusal to put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Didn’t he say it was a violant song? Duh! Doesn’t he know what the song was written about?
Now here’s the funny part.
I wish all those other people would just stop argueing about politics and just show some respect to each other… just as we have done here.
In all honesty, I never did look up your son-in-law on Google. But instead of searching for him on the Internet, I merely took you at your word. Although I don’t know you from Adam, I have no reason to doubt your story nor the fact that Sgt. Hughie was an incredible person whom I would have loved to have met. I feel that you’ve done a good enough job of explaining Sgt. Hughie that I needn’t bother searching it out on the Internet.
Now, what did your honorable and patriotic son-in-law die for. You say it was “loving people” and this may well be the immediate reason for his sacrifice. I’m sure that he joined and sacrificed for many reasons that were personal to him, “loving people” among them. Most of all, people join, fight, and sacrifice for love of country.
You take that one photo, which was misleading, and say that he refuses to salute the flag during the national anthem. Come on, that’s just not true and the problem is that you know it. Obama has NEVER expressed any idea that he hates the flag, this country, or the national anthem. You really have got to investigate these “forwards” you get from folks.
As an example, I got the same photo you’re talking about sent to my email by the Republican Party of Virginia and I believe they had titled it “Obama refuses to show respect during playing of national anthem and refuses to say pledge.” This has all be debunked, plain and simple. It’s a load of bull. Here is a Snopes article which details it very fairly - http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp
Republicans are going to have to do better than innuendo, rumor and lies to beat Obama in the Fall. How about they bring up issues instead?
“In all honesty, I never did look up your son-in-law on Google.”
You made my point for me. To you, Buddy isn’t worth the time, not a real human being. Just another “casualty” you can point to to say “get us out”.
I think that is sad.
Democrats, Repubs they can all do what they will because in the end they certainly will.
In an earlier post you asked me where are all of these EMBOLDENED terrorists hanging out these days.
Strictly a guess on my part but my best hunch would be inside the boarders of Pakistan/Iran down on those little prayer rugs prayering to Alah for their guy/gal to be elected the new president of the United States of America.
Now just be honest with yourself (I don’t realy expect it here). Which candidate(s) do you suppose these terrorists are praying DON’T get elected president?
I thought this was a funny post…as a right winger I can still enjoy a satirical opinion different than mine. No matter how wrong you are…haha :)N
@Nikki - thanks - I enjoy reading your blog although I don’t agree with you 100% or even 10%, OK maybe I agree with 2.43 % of the time (link under “Linkety-Links” everybody please visit).
@M54 - Please read my earlier response again, I really think this is becoming some blown-out misunderstanding. Just in case your in a rush, I’ll reiterate here. I did not GOOGLE your son-in-law, because I don’t need to verify what you’ve already told me. It’s not because I’m too busy or I don’t care. No, I trust you are telling a true story.
As for which candidate the terrorist wish would be elected, you can make an argument either way. For example, You’d have to agree that Bush and his cowboy rhetoric helped terrorist groups in their recruiting efforts.
Shifting focus to the two current candidates for President, you’d have to ask, which America do the terrorist want to fight? An America that continues Bush’s policies and isolates itself from the rest of the world OR an America that takes on terrorism with the rest of the civilized world at its side? If I were a terrorist, I’d rather fight the former.
Now that’s my honest opinion, I’d hope that you could trust me on that as I lack a GOOGLE reference by which you may verify my theory.
