John Denver sang that West Virginia was “Almost Heaven”. Well no matter how closely West Virginia may resemble the hereafter, it’s almost irrelevant in the grand scheme of politics. Nothing proved that more than yesterday.
Clinton’s victory was impressive by any standard and I’m certain that Obama’s bum is smarting today after that ass whopping. Does it change anything? The Clinton camp seems to think so and they’ve asked the super delegates to take a look at the victory before making their decision. (Here)
But should they? Clinton claims that W. Virginia is a swing state, but I sincerely doubt that she would be able to snatch it from McCain’s steely grip and for that matter Obama can put West Virginia in the “Don’t Waste Campaign Money” category for November.
The thing that I find most interesting about the Clinton/Obama split is that the Clinton’s tout that they are the candidate for the uneducated voter. Isn’t this tantamount to saying “I’m the choice of the folks who don’t know any better?” In exit polls, Clinton was favored by folks who listed “high school” as their highest academic achievement.
It appears that the strategy going forward for Clinton is to ignore reality and press on with the Hillary Futility Tour of America. Perhaps the campaign slog could be “Hillary Clinton: Show Her a Short Pier and She’ll Take a Long Walk.”

It’s like some horrible slasher movie sequel, sequel, sequel … The thing in the pants suit that would not die. I’m tellin’ ya’ kiddies even a steak in the heart will not make the Clintons go away. America, for the most part hates these two people and have nightmares of them crawling out of a soggy grave to loot the White House of all it’s treasures, silverware and sofas.
“I’ll just leave the safety of the group and go see what happened to all those super delegates. I think they are all in the shower…” Eeeeek they all shriek as the thing in the pant suit slashes her way through the steamy shower curtain. Hacking and cackling till they cast their vote for her.
*bert
Bert: what an apt analogy. I’m reminded of the 80’s slasher tradition of squeezing in that one extra scream before the credits.
Only the credits NEVER ROLL.
My guess is that Hillary is playing this thing out in hopes of suddenly getting a lot more money and cutting her financial losses. Either that, or evolution is real and there’s terrier genes in there somewhere.
Did you hear what MCCAIN said yesterday about GLOBAL WARMING?? (small steps)
Why OH WHY could he not have gotten the Republican nomination in 2004 instead of P. Bush?

Wow, do REALY understand what that means? Each of you look around your home town. How many fast food restaurants do you see? Quite a few I would imagine. As for the “Isn’t this tantamount to saying” remark. I think you could easily change that to “If you’ve ever spit into anyone’s drink at the drive through…”
About the “high school as their highest academic achievement.” remark. Don’t be so quick to underestimate these people. When your car breaks down it’s nice to have a reliable mechanic isn’t it? When the air conditioner floods your home, isn’t it nice to have some one to fix the A/C and dry the carpets too so you don’t get mold? And on and on and on.
Remember too, isn’t the national high school drop out rate over 40%? Who do you think they are going to vote for?
@M54 – without any reference, I’d imagine that W. Virginia’s drop-out rate is likely higher than the national average.
As for whom they will vote for, my guess is that McCain will take that state quite easily. The demographics are very favorable to McCain, less educated, white, etc. From the stuff I read, I don’t think that race or the rumors of Obama’s connections with Islam played a bigger role anywhere else than in W. Virginia.
Typically, reliable mechanics and AC repairmen have pursued education beyond high school in the form of Tech Schools, etc. So I don’t underestimate working class folks. In fact, I’m the first person in my family to get a college education and law degree, so I know the way working class thinks to some degree.
PolitiPornster (AKA College Boy Atrorney), I certainly stand corrected on the Tech Schools but I must point out a serious short coming in your most recent post.
Regarding the W.VA voters… aren’t they the ones clutching to their Bibles with gun racks in the back windows of their pick-ups? You didn’t mention that.
Additionally, if the W.VA. hillbillies were to get with the clans in TN (Hatfields & McCoys) it could spell more trouble for the Obama camp. Kind of like a “Hilbilly Cancer spreading”.
Finally, let me give you a secret stock tip… shhhhh, now listen close.
Shoes, invest in shoes. ‘Casue when Senator Obama gets the Dem nomination and the media has him to inspect and look closely at, the shoes will start dropping! I mean look at that genious Sean Penn. it’s already started!
BOYS: Must I stand in between you two with a shovel and break up all the fighting? (just kidding, just kidding). I will take small exception to the uneducated voter thing, as extremely rich people of all skin colors have just as much an ability to make ill-informed choices (come on PolitiP I know you agree with me there) and the whole concept of the uneducated masses is really over-worn.
But, to M54: when you break out the whole “clutching Bibles and gun-racks” thing you miss what is, in fact, a very valid point hidden inside that. The point is value and that to which we attribute value. The argument shouldn’t be about the irrationality of clinging to any one single issue when deciding for whom to vote, but if the people for whom we vote truly and wholly attribute the same value to our beliefs as we ourselves do- as any politician can profess to hold anything sacred while getting their freak on under the podium.
Right?
There’s nothing wrong with valuing guns and religion or making a guns, religion, and military spending sandwich. The question becomes if those things are what you value, are you absolutely sure your candidate does as well?
Before we get started here, let me correct one portion of your comment, so as not to mislead the gracious readers of this blog.
The famous feuding families (like that alliteration?) the Hatfields and McCoys were not from Tennessee. Most of one of the clans resided in West Virginia, the majority of the other in Kentucky. Interestingly enough, Kentucky is the next primary.
Thanks for the new nickname. However, I don’t know how well deserved it is seeing that I was a very non-traditional student. As I’ve said before on this blog, I did a stint in the military – this was after high school. After my honorable discharge, I didn’t go to school instead working at various trades until later in life, I went to college and even later law school. So I don’t know if I fall into the “college puke” category very neatly. But who am I to judge myself?
Your half right on this count. As the nominating process settles, Obama will come under increased scrutiny, no doubt about that. The assumption you make in your comment is that McCain will not be picked apart as well. McCain has a long voting record to look at, he’s had his share of tussles with his own party and if the rumors of his womanizing are true, then my Republican friends may want to make a trip to Payless Shoes as well. People such as yourself have come under the delusion that McCain is withou skeletons in his closet. Remember, this is the man that divorced his crippled wife for a younger “non-crippled” heiress. Further, I invite you to go on to Google and type in “McCain” and “Arizona Cardinals.” This will lead you to some VERY interesting results aside from the Pat Tillman entries.
Nope you are confusing the media’s current disinterest in McCain for his being a clean customer. His dirty laundry will be aired soon enough.
As for the comment about the typical W. Virginia voter, yep you are correct. The voters there are what I lovingly call “Bible-thumping Wal-Mart Republicans.” These are the folks that unerringly vote against their own economic & familial interests time and time again because the GOP gets them all hot and bothered about some meaningless tripe like “gay marriage.”
So they go on down to the polls and vote the GOP ticket because they don’t want Adam & Steve to have joint property rights. Meanwhile, they can’t afford to provide their children with medical care or dental care and they send their kids to substandard schools. All the while, corporations pay little to no taxes, failed corporations get bailed out, and bridges collapse as folks are commuting to their dead-end low paying jobs. But, man o’ man we sure showed Adam & Steve!
There are going to be a lot of shoes dropping, but in the end I think we’ll have a president who can properly signal “Touchdown!”
Wow, this is going to be fun. But alas, I must get the the chiropractor.
Just as a quick “qualifier”. I was born in Louisiana and although I was raised most of my life in Mississippi I still consider myself a Cajun. Both my parents are undeniable Coon-asses (which is a whole deeper meaning of a Cajun). I tell you all of this to let you know that it don’t matter one hill-o-beans whut you can google up on that there fancy pc with your high speed cable internet sitting in your dead cow (leather) fancy high back chair about the Hatfields and McCoys I just might know some of em personal like.
I’ll fix ya on the rest of th is later.
Next person to be mean gets hit on the head with a dead raccoon.
Just sayin’.
Ouch!!! That heart and now I think I’ll need a tetinous shot or something. Stop wielding the varmints!
Threatening you all with shovels had no effect, I had to break out the roadkill. see what you made me do? *lol*
Didn’t like the article but one of the better discussions over nothing.
I look at it this way, there is a lot of dumb people everywhere.
